Does Twitter Really Talk?

January 20, 2011 - Carol McBee

Do you ever wonder what all the hype is about when you hear the words Tweet, Twitter, Tweeps, Twitterverse and on and on?  I have to be honest; I did too!  I secretly created a Twitter Account when my daughter was just a new born as Ellen (yes, Degeneres!) had given a call to action: she wanted to reach 1,000,000 followers and I had planned to help her do just that – I signed up and followed her and then never “twittered” again for almost a year!  It was after about the millionth time I had asked my husband to stop looking at Twitter on his iphone that I finally caved and told him to make sure my account was set up properly and help me get started.  For the first little while, I simply didn’t get it – why does someone care to hear what I am doing in 140 characters or less?  I couldn’t figure out who to follow or how to get followers.  For anyone out there that is just starting to use Twitter, it just takes time.  Think of Twitter as a conversation – one long never-ending conversation that you can jump into at anytime.  As Scott Stratten (a social media guru) said “it’s just small talk, everything doesn’t have to be epic.” As a business owner, I find that there are TONS of entrepreneurs on Twitter, but that is probably because that is the pool of people that I am interested in following.  I also get most of my local news and weather on Twitter, and the odd dash of Hollywood gossip!  For others, they are on twitter because they follow all the big sports personalities and athletes, some love all things tasty and follow the foodies and bloggers about local food.  There are musicians, radio personalities, moms, dads, kids (my 26 month old daughter!) socialites, rockstars and more on Twitter – there is something for everyone!  That’s the beauty of Twitter – you can get to know someone through their witty and often humorous, 140 character remarks.

Twitter is an amazing outlet for all types of people and I love meeting my Tweeple in person, which is why our business network created Twitter Talks – an event for the newbies, wannabies and experts of Twitter.  We have brought together 4 highly influential and successful Twitter personalities and will be unleashing them to a crowd of 150 people on February 3 at the Art Gallery from 6-9pm.  Have a Twitter question?  We also have a panel of VIP Tweeps that will be answering a few of those questions for the audience.  For more information or to register visit www.bossymama.ca/events
